Western eyes over the past half-century or so. We’d get dribs and drabs of insight, but for the most part, we have really no idea what goes on internally, either in business or among family members. We got to see some real-life insight last fall with the documentary Saudi Women’s Driving School, and now, we get to see the first Netflix thriller from the country, a female-centric mystery series called Whispers.
WHISPERS: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?
Opening Shot: We see cars speeding down a road, then her screeching and crashing. We pan up from the roadway to see a car flipped over, its driver’s body sprawled out on the ground out the window.
The Gist: The driver is an entrepreneur named Hassan (Abdul Mohsen Alnimer), and we cut to the next day, with his wife Amal (Shaimaa Al Fadl) and daughters Wa’ad (Nada Tawhid) and Sawsan (Norah Al Anbar) coming back from his burial. The three of them are obviously stressed out after the accident, and Amal is also fielding calls from Hassan’s and her family about why she didn’t wait so they all could come for the funeral, despite the fact that burying him the next day is the proper way to honor his death.
